It is often difficult to measure the success of intervention efforts and the positive effect it can have on an individual’s life as well as other family members. Examples of successful intervention activities are presented for that purpose. The names have been changed to ensure privacy for these individuals.

Valerie

Valerie was referred to Youth & Family Connections for truancy and struggling with academic success in most of her classes. Valerie was also a teen mother and on probation. The assessment scored high on anxiety and it was learned Valerie had not attended school for the past two years. Valerie’s mother and aunt were enlisted to provide support by caring for Valerie’s child while she attended school. Referrals were made to the Nurse Partnership program and tutoring support at the school she attended. Within a short period of time she was able to bring her grades up and attended school regularly. As Valerie was on probation, these recommended services were given to and supported by the Probation Department.

Lana

Lana received a truancy referral for Youth & Family Connections as a result of not attending classes she felt were too hard or boring. The assessment showed concerns for anxiety and that Lana was struggling to keep up in some of her classes. Staff recommended tutoring assistance and a Behavior Agreement was developed requiring Lana to attend all classes and seek tutoring assistance. Lana began receiving tutoring help at school and gradually improved her grades in all classes and her attendance improved as well for the remainder of the school semester.

Stephanie

Stephanie was referred to Youth & Family Connections as a high risk youth from her school. Both parents and Stephanie attended the assessment which showed concerns for emotional and anger issues. A week later, Stephanie’s mother reported Stephanie started “cutting” herself. Staff recommended counseling, anger management and possibly mentoring services. After some hesitation, Stephanie started seeing a therapist and was no longer “cutting” herself. She began playing sports in school and improved her grades to ensure her eligibility to continue playing sports. The parents reported Stephanie is doing well and they have had no further problems occur.

Nate

Nate was brought to Youth & Family Connections by his mother with concerns over his behavior and suspected gang involvement. Assessment results showed concerns for anger and traumatic experiences. Nate was also struggling in school with grades in several classes. Services recommended included anger management, tutoring support in school and Boys & Girls Club. Nate enrolled in the anger management classes, began play organized sports through the Boys & Girls Club and was receiving tutoring assistance at school. Reports from Nate and his mother indicated his attitude and behavior were much better, his grades were improving, the gang issue was no longer a concern and the sports activity had calmed him down. Mother said Nate seems more content now and was doing well.

Kathy

Kathy came to Youth & Family Connections on a self referral by her mother after being expelled from school for fighting. The assessment identified concerns with anger, depression and suicidal ideation. Services recommended included anger management, personal counseling and the Gear Up program in school. Kathy attended the anger management classes, enrolled in Gear Up and began receiving counseling from NRBH. Reports from Kathy’s mother and the school based counselor indicated Kathy’s attitude was much better and her attendance and grades in school had improved. Mother told Youth & Family Connections staff “this is the Kathy I used to know”.
